9 Myths About Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the types of modern dentures. They are a reliable and safe way to restore the function of the tooth. But despite the popularity and a large number of advantages, there are many myths among patients who question the efficacy and safety of the procedure. The Burbank Dentist, Dr. Sahakyan presents and debunks nine of the most common dental implant myths.

Myth 1: An implant Is a Whole New Tooth.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root substitute. Subsequently, a metal-ceramic crown is installed on it, which reproduces the original shape and color. Thus, chewing and aesthetic functions are restored with the help of implantation.

Myth 2: Implant Installation Is a Long Time.

In fact, for an experienced specialist, implant placement is a fairly simple surgical procedure. Moreover, if we perform the procedure of immediate implantation, often the process of tooth extraction takes longer than the subsequent installation of the implant. So, you can remove a tooth for 15 minutes and put an implant in five minutes.

Myth 3: The Procedure is Really Painful and Risky.

The artificial root is implanted in the jawbone, so some patients believe that this is a painful and lengthy surgery. In fact, it takes about an hour and is performed with high-quality local anesthesia. The patient does not feel any discomfort during the implantation process itself.  If there is large-scale implantation (the installation of several implants at once) the patient may be offered the surgery under anesthesia or intravenous sedation.

Some discomfort and pain may appear after the implantation. They do not last long and the pain can be relieved with an analgesic recommended by the Burbank dentist.

Myth 4: Implants Cause Discomfort.

The implant is located inside the bone tissue, where there is no sensitive connective layer. Visually, it does not differ from the tooth, it can well withstand chewing loads but does not have the same sensitivity. So, if we feel with our teeth even the presence of a crumb between them, then with implants we will not feel anything like that.

Myth 5: Implants Are No Different from Ordinary Prostheses.

With the help of implantation, we return a previously lost tooth, and it has nothing in common with the prosthesis. Because the implant gets used to the bone tissue for life, and the prosthesis is temporary.

Myth 6: Dental Implantation Always Requires Bone Grafting.

Bone grafting is required in some cases. Bone grafting is required when the implant is installed a long time after the loss of a tooth and the jaw bone has already shrunk. Also, bone grafting (sinus lift surgery) may be required for some diseases of the bone, accompanied by small bone mass.

In each case, the Burbank dentist decides whether bone grafting is necessary after a thorough diagnosis: based on the results of an oral cavity image, computed tomography and a regular x-ray of the area to be operated on. Plastic surgery is performed using the patient’s own bone material or using synthetic bone tissue. In some cases, both surgeries (bone grafting and implantation) can be combined.

Myth 7: Only Elderly People Install Dental Implants.

The procedure has no age restrictions. They can be installed from the age of 18. The main reason is the lack of teeth and the unwillingness to wear a removable or bridge prosthesis.

Myth 8: Dental Implants Require Less Care Than Natural Teeth.

tooth decay

Implants and implant-supported implants need exactly the same care as natural teeth. Harmful bacteria and food particles accumulate in the oral cavity and this can lead to inflammation or other diseases. Therefore, you should regularly use a toothbrush and dental floss.

Myth 9: Dental Implants Are Really Expensive.

There are a variety of prices on the market now, and a stereotype has formed that high-quality implantation may not be affordable. We have been monitoring changes in the market for 15 years and can say with confidence that we offer people the best prices and the best quality.
